Can you train your own neural machine translation engine?

The answer is no. However, you can use OPUS-CAT (a free open-source MT engine) to fine-tune a pre-trained model with your own translation memory. The results are really quite good. Of course, your mileage may vary, because the resulting model strongly depends on the quality of the pre-trained model you choose, as well as on the quality and size of your translation memory.

I explain how to prepare your translation memory, how to fine-tune an OPUS-CAT model, and how to use the fine-tuned model in your daily work as a translator. All programs used, with the exception of the CAT tool, are free open-source software.

Why would you want to fine-tune your own engine? For one thing, the software is free, no subscription needed. For another thing, the software runs exclusively on your desktop or laptop and there is no connection to another server or the cloud. Your clients’ privacy is never violated.

Steps:

  • Step 1: Export and repair your translation memory
  • Step 2: Install OPUS-CAT and download a pre-trained model in your language pair
  • Step 3: Fine-tune OPUS-CAT with your translation memory
  • Step 4: Install plugin for your CAT tool and translate with your fine-tuned MT engine

Presentation at ATA65

In my presentation at ATA65, I briefly explain how to prepare your translation memory, how to fine-tune an OPUS-CAT model, and how to use the fine-tuned model in your daily work as a translator. All programs used, with the exception of the CAT tool, are free open-source software. The slides don't contain the videos shown during the presentation, but contain all relevant links and images.

Instructional Video

Coming soon - a full-length course explaining how to prepare your translation memory for training OPUS-CAT, how to install OPUS-CAT, how to fine-tune OPUS-CAT with your own TM, and how to use OPUS-CAT with Trados Studio (versions 2017 to 2024), memoQ, and Phrase. Some of the instructions can be found in my free video made for the Innovation in Translation Summit 2021, but getting things to run in older versions of Trados and in all versions of memoQ is NOT explained on the OPUS-CAT website and is NOT straightforward. I'll explain it all!

A brief, free video explaining the process in more detail can be found here. The video is slightly outdated, because it was prepared for the Innovation in Translation Summit in 2021 and several software versions have changed.
